Our Story
"Not all superheroes wear capes, some of them are baristas."
Having spent many years in and around food and drink it was always our goal and passion to have our own place to showcase this art. We now have two beautiful locations one within the beautiful Staunton Harold estate just outside of Ashby-de-la-Zouch and the other in the stunning Sudbury Courtyard located next to the National Trust Toy Museum in Sudbury Village in Derbyshire. Our coffee shops are both located in unique courtyards where you will find a variety of shops and studios to wander around! A great day out for all the family and made even better if accompanied by a tasty lunch or a slice of cake and a coffee with us!
About Us

Charlotte, having being brought up in a family run B&B in the Peak District, realised and grew her passion for fine food from the age of 10. Starting out helping in the family kitchen, she then went on to work in the local Tea Room before later moving to a local restaurant to continue her love affair with food. After moving into her role with Unilever she quickly realised that her goal was to have her own business and after meeting Will and starting a family together their business dreams became a reality.
Will was brought up in south Derbyshire and had fond memories of visiting Staunton Harold as a child, just another reason we felt this was meant to be. Will took a slightly different route to Charlotte having left school to become a football coach and then later following his dream of becoming a Firefighter, which he still does alongside running The Stables and raising their family together.
Together we started and successfully ran a Woodfired Pizza business for just over 4 years where we sold this to make way for what is now The Stables Coffee Shop. We took over ‘The Staunton Stables Tea Room’ from the previous owners Michael & Alison in May 2021 looking forward to a new challenge. Michael & Alison started the business from scratch back in 1984 and had great success building the business until their well-deserved retirement, this is when The Stables was born.
Following the success at Staunton Harold, in 2024 we opened up our sister site in Sudbury
"Our Vision is great coffee, great food and a great atmosphere having a low impact on the environment
Our mission is to achieve our vision by providing great customer service, engage with our customers and always listen to feedback to drive us forward. To provide a great ambiance by ensuring we have comfy seating, background music and happy staff.
Great food starts with our passion for street food hence The Stables Flat Iron Toasties - simple food done great. We make and bake as much of our own food as possible and use local business to help supply to meet our demands. We are also proud to be as inclusive to everyone in what we consider a great range of products from GF to Vegan we feel no one misses out.
Great coffee something we are super passionate about, it took us such a long time to get our own signature blend of coffee working with another business to help us reach our goal.
We are constantly trying to lower our impact on the environment by making changes where possible such as moving to glass and recycling as much as possible, including our coffee grounds.
